Commissioned through the Department for Education’s (DfE) low value framework, the completed facilities at the Energy Coast University Technical College in Workington include new technical and engineering workshops, meeting rooms, an Special Educational Needs (SEN) resource base, replacement sports pitch and a changing pavilion.
Cassidy + Ashton was appointed as the architectural designers and town planners on the project, alongside civil and structural engineers Curtins. Eric Wright Construction was appointed as the main contractor.
The works also include the design and construction of a new pedestrian crossing to connect the college’s two primary sites.
Simon Barlow, associate at Cassidy + Ashton and project architect said: “The new workshop and sports facilities will greatly enhance the students’ vocational training, career opportunities and their success in the construction and engineering sector.”
James Eager, director for Eric Wright Construction said: “It is great to have delivered these superb new facilities on time, allowing the college and its staff to obtain the necessary training in advance of the new autumn term.
“We have enjoyed a long relationship with the college, having originally built the facility back in 2013, and it is good to see continued investment and improvement in such an important local education establishment.”
Energy Coast UTC principal Cherry Tingle said: “We are absolutely delighted that our long awaited, world-class, workshop and sports facilities will be open and available for students to use from September.
Energy Coast University Technical College is a free school delivering academic, practical and technical skills in academic subjects, construction and engineering for 14-19 year olds through a partnership between education and industry in order to meet current and growing demand from local and regional employers working in the energy sector.
