Navigating Challenges

The project required the sensitive conversion of existing art-based study areas into a modern, multi-functional educational hub:

Feasibility & Strategy: We initially conducted a comprehensive estate review to identify the optimum location, balancing spatial requirements with strategic design and cost considerations.

Stakeholder Integration: We led a series of engagement meetings with both the University and the operator, Navitas, to align the project brief with their shared vision and key performance indicators.

Adaptive Reuse: The design involved repurposing traditional spaces into a mix of ICT-driven teaching areas, professional office spaces, and inclusive student breakout zones.

Impact & Recognition

Beyond the physical transformation, the project prioritised inclusivity and social responsibility, ensuring international students feel welcomed into the Manchester academic community.

The project was delivered on programme and within budget, while providing significant social value through collaboration with the University’s ‘First Generation Scholarship Programme’—supporting students through mentorship and community development.

What we did

  • Feasibility Review: Developed an initial assessment of potential estate locations to determine the most viable site for the new college.
  • Brief Development: Recorded and refined the project vision through intensive engagement with University and Navitas stakeholders.
  • Space Planning: Managed the transition from art studios to high-spec ICT and traditional teaching environments, alongside professional staff offices.
  • Full Design Delivery: Appointed from concept to completion, overseeing the preferred design through to successful final delivery.
  • Social Value Coordination: Collaborated with the contractor to support the First Generation Scholarship Programme, creating personal development opportunities within the local community.
