MMU Library Focussed Study

  • Client: Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Type: Refurbishment
  • Status: Completed

Following the successful library decant in September 2024, Cassidy + Ashton was appointed in March 2025 as Lead Designer and Architect for a further redevelopment phase within Manchester Metropolitan University’s John Dalton East building.

The project aimed to transform a first-floor area into a stunning destination space, specifically designed to meet student needs for high-quality, focussed study environments.

Navigating Challenges

Redeveloping the existing building fabric required a highly adaptive approach to overcome complex technical and structural hurdles:

Building Constraints: We managed significant challenges, including asbestos management and the coordination of modern building strategies within the existing structure.

Stakeholder Engagement: We led a comprehensive engagement programme to define design principles, exploring space planning and various study typologies to align with student aspirations.

Inclusive Environment: Through a biophilic approach, we developed a material and colour palette alongside end-users to ensure the new space felt calm, welcoming, and familiar.

Impact & Recognition

The project has been celebrated for its intentional design and for directly addressing student feedback to improve the learning experience.

‘Improve accessibility, to the thoughtfully curated pastel colour palette that makes the space feel calm, welcoming, and genuinely cared for, every decision feels intentional.’

Komal Ashfaq – Students’ Union President | Manchester Metropolitan University
