Sainsbury’s, Leigh

In 2012 Cassidy and Ashton handed over the first phase of the development on the land between Atherleigh Way and Wigan Road in Leigh for Brookhouse Developments. The first phase was the large scale B1 Retail development for Sainsbury’s The building provides up to 12,825m2 of floor space over two-storeys.

The development was procured under a Design and Build Contract. The contractor for the project was Bowmer & Kirkland.

The external design of the proposed retail development has adopted a contemporary architectural style which creates a warm and welcoming feeling by the use of large areas of glazing and accent lighting. A colonnade runs the full length of the front elevation providing shelter and establishing a vertical rhythm which will help breakdown the visual scale of the building. The building provides an architectural treatment that is human in scale, achieved through breaking up the elevations in to human scale elements, but in a way that also provides interest to visitors and passers by through active frontages. The high glazed frontage to the main retail park will give the retail development’s appearance a depth and interest, even from a distance. The thin roof eaves detail and the transparent/lightweight appearance of the upper wall finishes provides an appearance that is lightweight and “floats” above the solid forms below.
