Formerly an independent school the Royal School Wolverhampton officially opened as a Free School in September 2016. The school is an all through school from Aged 4 -18. The site is located within the Penn Road (Graiseley) Conservation Area and has a number of listed buildings within its curtilage.

Through extension, remodelling and refurbishment of the existing building stock, the school is to increase its current intake up to 1480 students by 2024.

The school also maintains a long-established boarding culture and has 112 boarding places taken up by students from more than 20 different nations. This boarding accommodation will undergo a comprehensive upgrade and refurbishment as part of the redevelopment proposals.
