London architects Luca Poian Forms’ innovative proposal for the mosque was selected as the winner of an international RIBA design competition in 2021 to find a unique design for the mosque from over 200 entries.

The building design seeks to blend both traditional Islamic architecture with a traditional Lancashire Victorian mill design in an elliptical form.

Notable exterior design features include a textured brick façade that references ‘mashrabiyas’, as well as a minaret tower. The structure will stand three storeys high with an internal floor area of c.1,685sqm. A prayer hall will be situated at ground floor level and ancillary classroom and community spaces across the remainder of the building.

The interior design should complement Luca Poian Forms’ creative design and vision for the mosque.

Located adjacent to the M6 and M55 motorway interchange in Preston, the planned mosque will be one of the most visible mosques in the country. It therefore provides a one-off opportunity for showcasing exceptional design.

Planning permission was granted for the development in January 2023 after the application was called in to the Secretary of State for determination.

The interior designs for the mosque should be innovative and can include traditional Islamic features but should be presented in a way that creates an exceptional and special place for prayer and worship.

If you are interested in being involved in this design project, please send your expression of interest alongside examples of your portfolio to preston@cassidyashton.co.uk by 5.00pm (GMT) on Friday June 16, 2023.
