Situated on the banks of Lake Windermere, the centre is located within 400 acres of woodland covering 1.5 miles of the Lake’s waterfront and is one of the largest and most established outdoor education centres in the United Kingdom.
Our brief involved developing an existing original concept with careful consideration to materials and operational challenges due to the remoteness of the location.
The C+A design team was keen to create a building that blends sensitively into its surroundings and respectful of the area’s World Heritage Status.
The resulting eco-friendly building covers 3,000 sq m, and incorporates hi-tech entrances, en-suite dormitory rooms and four teaching / training rooms with large glazed exterior walls.
It includes naturally weathered cedar cladding and wall shingles, Lakeland stone for exterior walls and a green roof system which helps to reduce carbon emissions.
